January 20th marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a federal holiday. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister turned social activist who fought for equal rights for people of all races. King made tremendous progress in the strive for equality with his peaceful protests. He gave speeches that inspired many and helped reform society as it was. This holiday sits on the third Monday of January every year. This is in honor of the late legend, right next to his birthday. Originally, the holiday was on his birthday, January 15, but since the celebration of MLK was enacted, the date changes slightly each year to align with the third Monday in January.
